Late Winter Fun!
What a treat to have a maple tree in our garden! The children could hardly believe their eyes when we drilled a small hole in the tree, hammered in the tap (made by our very own Mr. McCracken), then hung the bucket. The sap began to spill out at once and the children ducked their wee heads, mouths wide open, under the tap to collect the sap as it dripped out.
When the bucket is full we begin to boil it until we have a sweet syrup to add to Friday's oat porridge and Tuesday's bread. Karen also gives each one a spoon full to keep them sweet as syrup!
